Ritchey Design have been in the bike industry for more than 35 years and have made some superb saddles in that time frame.

One of their greatest designs would have to be the Ritchey WCS Marathon V2 Ti Saddle, which offers durability, comfort and the toughness you would expect from any Ritchey Design.

While the V2 Ti saddle might not be as light as some of the competitors bike seats, it makes up for it in its comfort and all round capabilities.

While riding for hours on end each day will usually leave you with numb muscles, chafed skin and aching rear, Ricthey’s new saddle will provide excellent cushioning from the roughest part of any journey.

The seat is made with a low profile shape and a narrow shell. It also maintains a vector wing design, which helps dissipate vibration of the rails, ensuring an even smoother road ride.

Made from genuine leather and abrasion resistant sides the saddle is an attractive product and one that offers great durability in all conditions.

For any beginner or established rider, this bike seat will tick the boxes in most categories and is a great all round product for any rider.

The Ritchey WCS Marathon V2 Ti Saddle is available in both white and black colours and retails for around $90 US.

The Selle Italia ‘Turbo’, as it is affectionately known, is a classic saddle that holds a unique place in the history of cycling.

The original design was lauded for its originality, comfort and style.

The third version of that saddle is now in circulation and it is looking to continue many of the elements that made the original so successful.

Focusing on comfort for long rides more than any other factor, the Turbomatic 3 can be bought in both steel rail models and titanium models.

With real pressed leather covering the surface, you know you are going to get a product that lasts and that will age well.

Carbon finishing adds extra strength and the firm padding is made all the more comfortable by the clever suspension system, which actually works.

Although not the lightest saddle on the market this is a popular choice for lovers of cycling history or for those who want to be comfortable on long distance rides.

Specs:

Manganese Tube Frame
Genuine Pressed Leather
Carbon Finishing
Suspension Saddle

The Terry Fly road saddle is a compromise between comfort and racing positioning, ideally suited to casual riders who don’t want to be worn down by the most hardcore saddles.

It is not the lightest saddle on the market at 245 grams, but it is light enough to not affect your riding performance greatly.

The fact that the Terry Fly sports a textured leather cover gives it a touch of class, and also makes it able to withstand long periods of heavy riding.

For durability you won’t get many better ‘cushioned’ saddles.

The gel inserts ensure that the saddle will mould to your body shape, so any discomfort that comes with ‘breaking in’ the saddle will quickly subside.

All up, this is a good option for those who want a nice looking, semi professional saddle that does not have the harshness of blade-style saddles.

Specs:

Textured leather cover
A good choice for training and racing
Reduces pressure from the front of the saddle
Titanium rails

With wide, flared rear flanks, the Specialized Toupe goes for a slightly different look than its competitor blade saddles.

The seat actually comes in two different width options so you can get as close as possible to the best fit when ordering.

Strengths of the saddle are that it is designed to avoid the numbness some larger riders get from time to time, and that the stiff support framework minimises lower back pain.

Some have argued that the seat is too hard, but it is always a matter of personal preference when it comes to saddles.

Weighing in at a very light 160 grams is the Selle Italia SLR saddle, which is a favourite among professional cyclists.

Boasting a carbon shell and titanium railing, the SLR is a nonexpensive way to spruce up your road bike and make sure you chalk up the miles in comfort.

The only criticism that could be leveled at this saddle is that the graphics tend to wear fairly quickly. However, if you are looking for a comfortable and light ride and are not too worried about the looks, this should not be a problem.

As far as blade saddles go the Selle Italia SLR is an excellent option.
