The clipless design and unrestricted float of the pedal continues to prove that user friendliness, luxury comfort, and improved performance, are all attainable in a simple, light-weight package.

The pedal also comes in a low profile shape and allows riders to position each foot closer to the spindle to achieve enhanced power and less wasted energy.

Speedplay’s X Series Pedals have also notched up a few awards in its time winning the prestigious Designers Choice Award from ID Magazine, which is the leading magazine in the field of cycling industrial design.

As well as having a real stylish look to it, the X series pedals are also ultra light and will definitely not weigh you down. And at 99 grams per pedal you will barely notice the difference to your bike.

The Time RXS Carbon road cycling pedal offers riders one of the most lightweight rides while ensuring a product of high quality and standard.

Time’s newest design is made from composite carbon pedal with a hollow titanium axel, making them one of the lightest road cycling pedals on the market.

The time pedals claim to be 100% compatible with any type of cycling shoes and so far their statement seems to true.

There’s plenty of scope for set-up, with 5 degrees of adjustable float either way, 2.5mm of lateral float and lateral offset adjustment, and so you can tailor them for personal choice or style of riding.

The feature makes them especially good for anyone with leg or knee niggles and really is a concept most other pedal manufacturers should look at.

When riding with the Time RXS Carbon pedals you really will feel like every ounce of energy you put in is transferred to through to the wheels.

The slick looking carbon products look great and are sure to grab the attention of other cyclists. While they can be a bit pricy, selling at around $190US, they are worth every penny spent.

If you have a bit of extra coin to splash with, then there is a lighter titanium-spindled version available for about twice the price.

And if you’re after a cheaper version, Time also sell a non carbon version of the pedal for around $135US.

SPECS:

• Weight: 235g/pair
• Body Material: Carbon-reinforced composite body
• Spindle Material: Steel
• Bearings: single bearing system
• Adjustments: Spring
• Cleats 5 degrees float

The Shimano PD-R540 cycling pedal is a perfect example of how a giant player in the bike industry are able to offer lower end products at an affordable price to the public.

Using original versions of their higher end products and tinkering with the designs, Shimano have been able to produce a pedal which looks great, works great and goes easy on the hip pocket.

Selling for around about $70 the only real differences in the PD-R540 and Shimano’s high-end Dura-Ace model is a less advanced bearing system, a steel axle and a heavier weight.

Apart from that, they pretty much maintain all the other quality features such as a wider platform, an audible, easy to use click-in, click-out system and the smooth ride that comes with most Shimano products.

SPECS:

# Wide pedal platform for foot-pedal stability
# Low maintenance sealed cartridge axle unit
# Large binding target for quick engagement
# Adjustable cleat tension with indicators

BeBop SL pedals have a distinctive look about them and have gained a reputation for ease of use.

The design of the BeBop SL puts an emphasis on simplicity and efficiency, and the pedals are easy to clean and maintain because of their spacious nature.

At less than 200 grams a pair you are not suffering a weight penalty for equipping these on your bike, and with only a little bit of riding you will quickly get used to the feel.

The simple cleat design make clipping in and out very straightforward, and the stack height and float of the pedals are also great drawing points.

The only real thing to watch out for is making sure you do not overtighten the cleats, because this can force your baseplate to bend. If you look after the BeBop SL pedals – and that’s not hard to do – they will look after you.

Crank Bros have produced a number of popular road racing pedals and the Quattro SL has become a hit with a big section of the cycling market.

The ability to clip into the pedals from two angles should not be overlooked, as it provides great flexibility and ease of use.

Some find the entry points a little bit stiff but these soften over time and are the main reason for the strength of fit with the pedals.

You won’t have to worry about cornering clearance with the Quattro SL pedals either, because they sit neatly and tightly against the cranks.

If there is a drawback to the Quattro SL it is the metal coverings on the pedals, which appear to be cheap and can sometimes slip off too easily.

On the whole these are good pedals that will remain sturdy over time and are practical for long distance riding.

Specs:

Light system weight (363g per pair with the cleats)
Great cleat/pedal contact area
Adjustable cleat position
Narrow Q-factor
Tight cornering clearance
Smooth rotational precision
Dependable entry and exit
Great cleat retention during sprints

This product from noted pedal maker Speedplay is perfect for tight cornering and good general riding balance.

The Speedplay X/2 is a double sided pedal that is designed to have a real centre-of-axis float and which is compatible with both three and four hole mounting patterns.

The clearance on cornering is very high, and the design is very attractive and simple.

Some have criticised the Speedplay X/2 for getting dirty easily, but this is only the case with those who ride through muddy terrain.

Generally these pedals are easy to clean and maintain and are highly valued by road riders.
