Options for cycling pedals

It is important that you are comfortable when riding your bike, and one of the most important steps in creating comfort is having the correct cycling pedals.

You may not be aware of the fact that different types of bikes require different types of pedals. BMX bikes and most mountain bikes use flat pedals without any straps or clips. This is because these bikes are typically used for casual riding and don’t need to worry about energy efficiency as much as road bikes.

As a road cyclist, you have two main options when it comes to choosing pedals. The two options are clipless pedals and toe clip pedals.

Clipless pedals have grown dramatically in popularity over the past decade and are now considered to be the best choise by most cyclists. Basically, they are smaller than standard pedals and require special shoes to be worn when using them. Your shoes will clip directly into the pedals, using magnets and cleats. These pedals are very efficient because you are using all your power on the downstroke and upstroke to propel the bike.

Toe clip pedals can be simpler to use and are designed for casual road riders. Basically your foot is held loosely on the pedal by a clip and strap that encases the pedal. These are cheaper than clipless pedals but less efficient.

Make sure you choose pedals that you are comfortable and happy with.
